Cultural Connections Holiday Program

Tuesday 4 January - Friday 21 January

Enhance your visit to the museum’s latest exhibition Connections across the Coral Sea these school holidays by taking part in creative First Nations workshops.

Families are invited to participate in traditional dance and artistic workshops run in conjunction with Townsville’s Big Eye Theatre company.

FREE DANCE PERFORMANCES

5 January, 12 January and 19 January at 10 am.

Be wowed by the spirit and joy of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance performances in the Great Gallery.

  • Performance runs for approximately 30 minutes
  • Free with museum admission.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS

Get creative and learn about our local community and their culture. 

$6 per person, per workshop excludes museum admission

  • If participating in craft workshop, all materials supplied and you get to take home your creation.
  • Activities are suited to a variety of age groups. Please check each activity for recommendations.
  • Bookings for workshops are essential and numbers are limited. Book online via the links below.

Please note that some of the workshops are based around Women’s Business or Men’s Business, and for Cultural reasons are restricted to those gender groups.

Women’s Dance Workshop
6 January, 13 January, 20 January | 10am – 11am

  • Learn how to prepare and perform a dance from Aboriginal women dressed in traditional costumes.
  • For Cultural reasons, this workshop is for women and girls only.
  • Recommended for ages 4 years and over.

Clap Stick Making Workshop
7 January, 14 January, 21 January | 10am – 11am and 12pm – 1pm

  • Learn about the origins of clap sticks, while you carve, sandpaper and paint your own clap sticks to take home.
  • Recommended for ages 8 years and over.

Dot Art Jewellery Making workshop
10 January and Monday 17 January | 10am – 11am

  • Make your own dot-art jewellery using wooden beads.
  • Recommended for ages 8 years and over.

Yigiyigi (didge) workshop
10 January, 17 January | 12noon – 1pm

  • In this workshop, you’ll join the men as they share their knowledge of yigiyigi (didge) and how to play it.
  • For Cultural reasons, this workshop is for men and boys only.
  • Recommended for ages 12 years and over.
