Treasured collections unveiled in new exhibition

08 May 2021

The stories behind some of the extraordinary objects within Queensland Museum Network’s collection will take centre stage in a new travelling exhibition Antiquities Revealed opening at Museum of Tropical Queensland on Saturday 8 May.

Featuring incredible pieces dating back to over 4,000 years ago, Townsville is the first regional venue to host the impressive exhibition, which premiered in Brisbane in December 2019.

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said Antiquities Revealed provides an opportunity to highlight the museum’s expansive State collection.

“Our collection has more than 15 million objects and through the Antiquities Revealed, we will be able to showcase a selection of these artefacts and the fascinating stories behind them,” Dr Thompson said.

The exhibition features over 200 objects that provide insights into daily life, personal dress, technology and beliefs from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilisations.

Queensland Museum Archaeologist Dr Brit Asmussen curated Antiquities Revealed and said it will feature a diverse range of intriguing stories.

“We are delighted to share some of our favourite items from the collection through Antiquities Revealed,” Dr Asmussen said.

“The objects featured in the exhibition are a fascinating insight into the stories from a different era, yet we can still connect with them as these items were used for day-to-day activities such as painted pottery from Greece and Cyprus, glass perfume bottles and fragments of mosaic pavement from Pompeii.

Antiquities Revealed tells a story of the people of this time – their lives, passions, creativity and innovation.”

From the common to the exquisite, visitors are invited to marvel at the intricate and well-loved items of everyday life from centuries ago through Antiquities Revealed.

Antiquities Revealed is included with museum admission and is open from Saturday 8 May 2021 and run until Sunday 5 February 2022.

The exhibition will support Museum of Tropical Queensland’s international travelling exhibition Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World running from Saturday 15 May – Sunday 14 November 2021.

Museum of Tropical Queensland is part of the Queensland Museum Network and open 9:30am to 4pm daily (closed Good Friday, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day)
