Museum seizes the day with new Ancient Rome exhibition

12 May 2021

Step back in time and discover the legacy of the great Roman Empire when Museum of Tropical Queensland welcomes Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World exhibition on Saturday 15 May 2021.

Ancient Rome highlights one of the most powerful civilisations in the history of humankind by showcasing replica art, machines and technology from the famous era.

Created by internationally acclaimed Artisans of Florence, Italy the exhibition is made up of over 50 displays including frescoes, catapults, armour, busts and weapons all reconstructed from ancient Roman records.

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said the exhibition would give visitors the opportunity to be guided through important historical events, myths and legends of Ancient Rome.

“Visitors will be entertained whilst learning just how much we have inherited from this great Empire with many of the objects and concepts still a part of our contemporary life,” Dr Thompson said.

“After a year of closure due to extensive roof works, Queensland Museum Network is excited to bring this national touring exhibition to Townsville to celebrate not only the reopening but all that the museum has to offer.”

The exhibition has been produced and curated by the Artisans of Florence - International (Australia) in collaboration with The Niccolai Group for museums and art centres across regional and remote Australia.

Artisans of Florence Director Thomas Rizzo said the exhibition really resonates in regional communities where practical innovation, teamwork and community is key to success.

“It's a testament to the Roman Empire's lasting impact on our modern world and way of life, and the practical can-do attitude of the Romans,” Mr Rizzo said.
Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World is free with museum admission, opens on Saturday 15 May and closes on Sunday 14 November 2021.

The exhibition will run alongside Antiquities Revealed, a Queensland Museum travelling exhibition that showcases the Queensland State Collection of real artefacts from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt.

Museum of Tropical Queensland is part of the Queensland Museum Network and open 9:30am to 4pm daily (closed Good Friday, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
