Queensland Museum Network Acting CEO and Director Dr Jim Thompson said International Museum Day is an annual celebration to highlight the important role museums play in communities and is driven by the International Council of Museums.

“Across the globe museums are bringing history and science to life, enabling millions of people to engage with our scientific and natural heritage and to view precious objects usually only seen in history books or online,” Dr Thompson said.

“We are proud of the world-class exhibitions and programs we offer visitors across the network, and we remain committed to ensuring our institutions continue to service our communities, offering unique and dynamic experiences and places to enjoy, learn and explore.”

Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said International Museum Day was the perfect time for people to visit their local museum to explore the fascinating exhibitions and displays, and take advantage of free activities.

“Our institutions like the Museum of Tropical Queensland hold important stories that connect communities, commemorate our history, capture memories and help us shape our identity,” Ms Enoch said.

Activities at Museum of Tropical Queensland include

  • The popular Beau's Buddies children's object based activity and craft for 6 years and under, from 9.45am.
  • An exclusive and intimate tour behind the scenes of artefacts from HMS Pandora (places are limited, bookings essential) from 11am.
  • talk from Senior Curator of Paleontology Dr Espen Knutsen talking about his work digging for sea monsters in the Arctic Circle at 12pm.
  • talk about the expeditions to the HMS Pandora wreck site and how the objects were found and recovered at 1pm.
  • Kids craft activities all day.

Queensland Museum Network will also offer free entry to the Perception Deception exhibition at South Bank, Brisbane, The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich, and Cobb + Co Museum in Toowoomba.

International Museum Day is now in its 40th year and this year’s theme is “Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics”, to raise awareness that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, and cooperation and peace among peoples.
