Earth Quest Exhibit Opens at Museum of Tropical Queensland

14 December 2009

A new interactive science exhibit taking visitors on a voyage from the outer limits of the galaxy to the centre of the Earth opens on 17 December at the Museum of Tropical Queensland.

Earth Quest - Outer Space to Inner Earth  is a travelling exhibition from Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra, and will be on display at the Museum of Tropical Queensland from 17 December 2009 - 15 April 2010.

Museum of Tropical Queensland Director Peter McLeod said the Earth Quest exhibit would be a perfect school holiday activity for children interested in learning about their planet and outer space.

"The exhibits cover a wide range of topics such as astronomy, geology, geography, environmental science and biology," Mr McLeod said.

"Visitors can explore and answer such questions as: Why do we have seasons? How do mountains form? How have animals adapted to life in different environments? How can fossils be used to date their surroundings?

"Each individual module of the exhibit will keep you busy pushing buttons, moving levers and lifting flaps, entertaining visitors and at the same time teaching them how the world works," he said.

The Earth Quest exhibition has 30 different activities, each one relating to a different part of our planet. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to piece together tectonic plates, make a volcano erupt and dig a hole through the Earth to see where they end up.

Museum of Tropical Queensland Marketing and Public Programs Manager Mei Nee Cheong said she expected Earth Quest to be a must-see for families with children.

"The MindZone, our science centre, is already a highlight of the visit for children. Earth Quest will bring dozens more fun, interactive displays that kids will love," Ms Cheong said.

"We are also encouraging educators to consider booking a school excursion for term one 2010 as the exhibition does have curriculum linked-learning outcomes relevant to the Studies of Society and Environment and Science subjects."

The Museum of Tropical Queensland, part of the Queensland Museum, is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily except Christmas Day.

Locals enjoy free entry, through the generous support of Townsville, Burdekin, Charters Towers and Hinchinbrook councils.
