Hunters and Collectors

A new exhibition showcasing indigenous-themed ‘kitsch’ collectables is on display at the Museum of Tropical Queensland until 10 March 2014.

Trish Barnard, Senior Curator of Cultures and Histories at the museum has recently completed a master’s degree studying non-Indigenous Australian attempts to make Indigenous-themed souvenirs last century, the results of which could range from kitsch to offensive.

Her research was based on a remarkable assemblage of over 2,000 souvenirs and collectibles donated to the Queensland Museum by leading Queensland historian Glenn Cooke.

The collection represents tourist objects made by non-Indigenous or even non-Australian designers that reflect blatant appropriation, influence and adoption of Indigenised motifs.
