Australia’s first Horrible Histories® exhibition opening soon at Museum of Tropical Queensland

12 September 2017

Batten down the hatches! A gruesome band of horrible pirates will be taking over the Museum of Tropical Queensland when it presents Horrible Histories – Pirates: The Exhibition from Saturday 16 September.

The Australian National Maritime Museum, together with Scholastic Children’s Books, is delivering the interactive, hands-on exhibition based on the bestselling Horrible Histories books.

The exhibition will take families back to the days when perilous pirates ruled the seas and bring to life author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown’s unique approach to history with foul facts, lively illustrations and gruesome games.

Queensland Museum Network Acting CEO Dr Jim Thompson said the Museum was excited to be the first venue in Queensland to present the internationally-recognised experience Horrible Histories – Pirates: The Exhibition.

“This family-friendly exhibition complements our permanent exhibition which is based on the perilous and tragic story of the HMS Pandora, the ship sent to capture the Bounty mutineers in 1790,” Dr Thompson said.

Horrible Histories – Pirates: The Exhibition will challenge families to discover if they have what it takes to be a really horrible pirate.

Queensland Museum Director of Public Engagement Jillian Marsh said visitors can take command of a pirate ship, design their own pirate flag and try out a range of weapons, from cutlasses to cannons.

“They can also find their fate on the wheel of misfortune, discover the best loot to steal and take a pirate selfie,” she said.

“Along the way, visitors will discover why pirate women were just as wicked as the men, practice talking the patter of a pirate and learn about the pirate’s ships, their punishments and the rules they lived by.”

Kevin Sumption PSM, Director of the Australian National Maritime Museum, said as Australia’s home for maritime history, the Australian National Maritime Museum has a mandate to share significant stories with people around the country.

Horrible Histories Pirates: The Exhibition was a big hit with our Sydney visitors and we are thrilled that Queensland audiences can experience this exciting exhibition,” Mr Sumption said.

Horrible Histories – Pirates: The Exhibition will open on Saturday 16 September and is scheduled to close on 4 February 2018.
